Simplify: God's Word

Church Family,

I mentioned Monday that our church wants to Simplify but not limit. Our 3 initial focuses are: Prayer, God’s Word, & Singing

During the crucifixion of Christ, He cries out. The people know the scriptures well enough to know that Elijah is coming back, but they misapply this truth.

Mark 15:34-35 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”

Had they correctly applied this verse they would have turned to Psalm 22.

Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?

Take some time today and read the rest of Psalm 22. It clearly describes the crucifixion long before it happened. If we will focus on learning and applying God’s word, then we will be able to recall the promises of God that apply to our lives. Promises like I will never leave you or forsake you, with God all things are possible, and that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Simplify without limiting.

Singing

Church Family,

I mentioned last night that I desire that our church simplify church without limiting the church. Then I gave 3 areas of focus: Prayer, The Bible, and Singing.

Mark 14:26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

After seeing Judas leave to betray Him, Jesus leads the disciples in song. Christ sang songs of Praise to the Father. If Jesus faced temptation with Song then we need to learn to practice this as well. What is the song of your heart? If you don’t have a song of praise, crying out, joy, etc. can I encourage you today to begin learning one?

Reminders:

  1. Seniors are leaving at 9am tomorrow for the Senior outing.
  2. Weds at 6pm Family Fun Night. WARNING: We will have water games, shaving cream and silly string battles, and more. Bring a towel and change of clothes!
  3. Thursday at 9am Lifeline screening will be here. Go to our website for more info.
  4. We are having Ice Cream for Awesome August this week.

Entitlement 2

Church Family,

How powerful is the gospel? Who doesn’t need the gospel? A small part of what makes God amazing is that to admit our need for Him is not a weakness but a strength. I believe that for us to reach the point of admitting our need for Christ we must recognizing our sinfulness and the consequences of living in a fallen world.

Mark 12:7 But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’

Christ is telling a parable that describes how the world has treated the servants of God in the past and now God’s son. Rather than admitting their need for God they tried to remove God and take from Him what belongs only to Him. Entitlement will go to great lengths to get what it wants no matter what damage it causes to others. In what ways do we act spiritually entitled today? How is the gospel the only cure?

Can I encourage you today to get honest about how you treat God, His Word, and His people? Are they your competition? If you could remove or belittle others would it help advance your desires?

Reminders:

  1. Family Summer Camp leaves the church at 2pm tomorrow and will return around 11am Saturday.

Entitlement

Church Family,

Mark 10:42-45 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

When we live with Entitlement it keeps us from giving our lives for God’s mission and leads us to taking from others for satan’s mission. For a believer to refuse to serve is unbiblical. It is the opposite of Christ to live Entitled.

Are there service opportunities that are beneath you? Are there lengths that go to far to reach the world for Jesus? Do you demand that your preferences/voice/desires be heard louder than others? Entitlement is a worship killer! It focuses on the lie that God and man should worship us and do as we desire.

Can I encourage you today to consider how you are living a life of Spiritual Entitlement? Do you easily get mad at God because you are having a bad day? Is your anger at others always their fault?  If the answer to these questions is easy, then you are struggling with Entitlement. Admit your sin, humble yourself, beg God for forgiveness, and finally go and tell others of the forgiveness you found in Christ.

Reminders:

  1. Visitation tonight at 5:30 spaghetti and salad, 6:15 we go out. A sign of entitlement is that visitation is for others and not for you. God commanded that we should all Go and make disciples.
  2. Softball game at 7pm with White Savannah. Come out and join us
  3. Family Summer Camp Thursday through Saturday. We will leave the church at 2pm and return around 11am Saturday.
  4. August 15th Family Fun Night at 6pm
  5. Praise God yesterday was our 9th Baptismal service of the year. Beg and plead with God for the next soul that He will bring from Eternal death into Eternal life.

God is Speaking, Are We Hearing

Church Family,

In my reading this week I saw the power of God unleashed on Earth. One of the questions that I’ve wrestled with and would ask that you do the same is this: What in my life would keep me from hearing the direction of God? What in my life would prevent me from following Jesus? Is God still unleashing His power(He is), but I’m not seeing or hearing it?

Mark 4:9 And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Isaiah 6:9 And He replied, "Go and tell this people: 'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.'

Ezekiel 12:2 "Son of man, you are living in a rebellious house. They have eyes to see but do not see, and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious house.

Can I encourage you today to take the time and praise God for how often He reveals Himself to us? Can I also encourage you if you are like me and don’t always hear clearly from God to admit your struggles with hearing and knowing God’s voice? God resists the proud, but He will not turn away the Humble.
