God's service plan for you

Church Family,

A common question that many Christians wrestle with is, why doesn’t God allow me to do ____________? I think this happens a lot with ministries within the church. You may want and feel able to do a certain ministry, but it never works out for you to.

Mark 5:18-20 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.

This man wasn’t allowed to go with Jesus. What may explain this is a church history story that recalls how the Christians when fleeing Jerusalem because the Romans were burning it down. The story says that they came to this area and found that there were churches already established and believers that were willing to take them in and help them out.

Now only God really knows why He wouldn’t allow the man to go with Him, but it helps us to trust that God’s plan is greater than ours and many times is thinking way in the future.

Can I encourage you today to pray about how you can serve the Lord with gladness? Ask the Lord to show you the full power of the gospel and how where you are serving best fits His eternal plans.

Reminders:

  1. August 9th-11th Family Summer Camp at Camp Pinehill. There will be an important meeting this Sunday after the morning service about this.

Using God's Word to Disobey God

Church Family,

While continuing to dwell on the Power of the Gospel as I read God’s word this morning I am moved to realize a terrible sin in my life. I often will use God’s word as an excuse to not to do God’s word.

Mark 3:4-5 And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored.

One of the many powers found in the gospel is that there is no law that keeps us from doing good. No law that is written that prevents us from sharing the gospel, reaching out to the “least of these,” and serving those in need of salvation.

Yet, I must confess I will often try to use the Word of God as a reason to not Love, Serve, and Go. What are some of the scriptures that you abuse to prevent you from sharing the gospel?

Some might argue that there is more to being a believer/church than sharing the gospel. That our focus should be on unity, love, etc

Mark 3:14-15 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach15and have authority to cast out demons.

The Power of the Gospel brings the presence of God in our lives and compels believers to stand against all opposition in order to share the Gospel.

Mark 3:24-25 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.

The Power of the Gospel brings true unity with God, not the knowledge of the Word and not human agreement.

Doctor Visits

Church Family,

It’s good to be able to take a vacation but even better to be back home. We missed being with our church family but were praying for you daily. Over the past several weeks I’ve been praying about the Potential and Power of the Gospel. The question I will wrestle with today is, “Who am I unwilling to share the Gospel with?” What leads me to withhold the gospel from others?

Mark 2:16-17 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Can I encourage you to wrestle with those same questions today? Will you also take the time to Thank God for making sick visits? Thankfully Christ came to and for the sin sick. There are at least 2 things you need to know about this passage: 1) Everyone is in need of Jesus. We have all sinned against God.

2) In spite of everyone needing Jesus, not everyone will see that they need Him. Especially the religious.

Stopping Others From Worshipping

Church Family,

Matthew 26:7-8 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. 8And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste?

  1. I must confess there have been times that I let my pride and fear of what others think about me limit how I worship God. The Spirit was leading me to pour out my affections on Jesus, but what would others say?
  2. I must also confess there are times where I have questioned the true worship of others. Maybe it was jealousy, maybe entitlement, I mean if God was going to use someone to worship it had to be me first and then others, right?
  3. In both case I sinned greatly against God and His people. In both cases I hurt the body of Christ. In the first I grieved the Spirit by disobeying His leading me to worship. In the second I quenched the Spirit by falsely judging another person’s worship.
  4. There will always be people who will question your worship of God. Don’t let them discourage you. The saddest part about this is that the ones who often discouraging our worship are the leaders of the church or at least those that we give leadership to.

Can I encourage you today to take some time and praise God? Pour out your love and appreciate for who He is and what He has done for you. Can I also encourage you to spend some time confessing your sin of grieving and quenching the Spirit if it is needed?

How will Jesus find me?

Church Family,

There have been 2 themes that I’ve been dwelling on recently and hope to share in more detail about in the coming months. 1) The Potential of the Gospel: who can’t it change and what situation can’t it solve. 2) The second coming of Jesus: How would my life change if I lived as if today is the last day I can tell others about Jesus?

Matthew 24:45-51 Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? 46Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 47Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. 48But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ 49and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know 51and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Can I encourage you to pray about the Potential of the Gospel? How would your life change if you viewed the gospel as the most powerful and needed message in the world? Will you pray that God would grip my heart and yours if you desire with the truth that Jesus is coming back? How would these 2 things change your life or the life of your church if you applied them daily to your life?
