The Husband We Need

Church Family,

As a young believer I struggled to read the Old Testament. I literally had to force myself to read through it the first time. What I found was that I couldn’t understand the New Testament without knowing the Old Testament. Hosea is a perfect example of seeing Jesus in the Old Testament.

Hosea 2:16 “And in that day, declares the LORD, you will call me My Husband, and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’

Hosea 2:19-20 And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the LORD.

Hosea 3:5 Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the LORD and to his goodness in the latter days.

Ephesians 5:25-33 describes the Church is the Bride of Christ. This is not a new revelation as you can see. The question that I have is why? Why would God reveal Himself this way? The best answer I can give. God is not using marriage as an example. God created marriage to reveal Himself. Sadly, there is no perfect marriage outside of the one that Christ has with His Bride. His marriage to the Church includes this: Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

All those times that Satan lied and described God has hating you is not true. It’s quite the opposite. Christ loves us and is seeking daily to make us more like Him through His word. Daily Christ is removing any spot, wrinkle, unholiness, and blemishes from our lives.

Revival is breaking out in our city. As many of you have heard on April 15th Langston Baptist began a youth revival. That revival has grown from 200 or so youth to over 1800 people attending last night. There have been 631 salvations during this time. Tonight, we will be praying together as a church for this revival but let me encourage you to attend this revival if possible. Take your lost loved ones. I believe services begin at 6:30pm. If I’ve been told correctly they are praying that they can use the football stadium soon to accommodate the large crowds.

Why Cheaters Cheat

Church Family,

Praise God for such a wonderful service yesterday! I am so thankful for the men and women that helped cook, decorate, and clean up for Senior Adult Sunday.

Why? Why did she/he cheat on me? We ask this question hoping that somehow the answer will remove the sting of their infidelity. Rarely do we get the real answer and when we get the real answer, it doesn’t really help us.

Friday, we read about Hosea. A man that God commanded to marry a cheater to put it nicely. It was symbolic of how we cheat on God but what’s at the heart of our cheating on God?

I believe that are at least 2 things and those are found in these verses:

The cause- We have a heart that likes to give credit to creation. We think that the thing/person is the source of what makes us happy. Our belief is that we don’t need God because I can get what I want from somewhere else. In a relationship the cheater, will think that joy comes from the physical acts, looks, feelings, etc. they don’t realize it is the relationship with the person. Bottom line: They are ungrateful.

Hosea 2:5 For their mother has played the whore; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’

The lie- God doesn’t provide. By being faithful to God you are missing out. This lie wants to make us believe that we can trust our desires over God’s word. In a relationship, the cheater will believe that they are what’s important. Bottom line: They are the center of attention. It’s them that makes things great. They believe they can create happiness/joy. They honor themselves.

Hosea 2:7b-8 Then she shall say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband,
for it was better for me then than now.’ 8And she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the wine, and the oil, and who lavished on her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.

So ladies/guys when they say it’s not about you, its about me. They are right. God is never the cause of our cheating on Him. God also never leaves us.

Take a few moments and examine your pet sin. What is the cause/reason you love it so much? What lie did you fall for? Has that sin ever really delivered all that it claimed it would?

Go Marry a Cheater!

Church Family,

I’m looking forward to Senior Adult Sunday this weekend. Be in prayer for Rev. Mack Hutson and the message.

One of the many great lessons that Seniors can teach us in how to have healthy marriages. It blows my mind to hear of couples being together for 40, 50, 60+ years. What a great testimony!

Hosea 1:2 When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, the LORD said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the LORD.”

I highly doubt that the prayer of most single people is to find someone who will constantly cheat, embarrass, and run away to the arms of another every chance they get, but this is what GOD told Hosea to seek out and marry. Why would God do this? God created us to have a relationship with Him. When we sin against God it is the same as playing the Harlot. We are stepping out on God. What is amazing is that even when we do this, God does not leave us. He still pursues us. Our lack of commitment doesn’t change God’s level of commitment. In marriage terms, God does not divorce us even though we have given Him grounds to do so daily.

Reminders:

  1. Sunday Senior Adult Day with Rev. Mack Hutson. Lunch will be served. All non-seniors are asked to bring a dessert. There will be no evening services.

Confirming and Strengthening Others

Church Family,

A big thank you to all who showed up to help with the mission project last night. I also want to thank the BYW for cooking and serving and Brotherhood for cleaning up.

People get discouraged. In fact, the conversation that I probably have the most with servants in the church, “Why should they keep serving?” We can never express appreciation enough for our teachers, leaders, and members, etc. Just in case you are wondering, showing up for events is probably as meaningful as a word of encouragement to a leader. Words of appreciation are needed, but your presence will speak volumes to others.

Daniel 11:1 “And as for me, in the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to confirm and strengthen him.

Strangely the way Daniel is confirming and strengthening Darius is by telling him his end. The end of his kingdom, people, and the world.

Daniel 12:1-2 “At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. 2And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Daniel’s warning to Darius applies to us as well. We have to live for eternity. Nothing of this world lasts. All flesh will return to the dust. Our flesh is like a seed according to God’s word in 1 Corinthians 15:35-49. What are you sowing? Are you sowing a seed of eternal life or eternal death?

What are you sowing into the people around you? Encouragement? Support?

This Sunday is Senior Adult Day. Will you show your support through words of appreciation for the Seniors and with your presence? Is there a ministry that you miss or wish the church could do? How can you use your words and presence to revive or create such ministries?

Reminders:

  1. Sunday, Senior Adult Day with Rev. Mack Hutson. All non-seniors are asked to bring a dessert.
  2. Monday, Baptist Women’s Meeting. They are meeting at the church at 4:45 or you can go to the County Building parking lot at 5:05 to go out to dinner. Please call Gayle if you have any questions.
  3. May 6th Gideon Sunday. During the morning service we will take up an offering to support their ministry.
  4. May 13th Mother’s Day celebration. If you are wishing to dedicate your baby during the service, please sign up on the bulletin board.
  5. June 3rd Graduate Sunday. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. We need to know who is participating by May 13th. If you have any questions, ask Brian.
  6. If you have not spoken to Gayle about serving during VBS (June 17th-21st), then please do so soon.

Why God Forgives

Church Family,
Another week, another opportunity to witness. I am praying that God will give you the opportunities to share your faith and that we will be bold and courageous to do so.

In Daniel 9, Daniel has learned from reading the Prophet Jeremiah’s words that the exile of Israel will only last 70 years. In response to this news Daniel begins to pray for the nation and himself that all will turn from their sin.
I hope this is not the case with you, but there are times in which I feel so sinful that I feel I must get better before praying. Why would God listen to someone who just sinned or recently sinned so poorly? I guess the real question is why does God forgive us? What causes the Lord to forgive our sins?

Daniel 9:18 O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. 19O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. Delay not, for your own sake, O my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.

God never forgives us because we deserve it. God never forgives because we have done enough good deeds. God forgives us when we confess our sin, express a desire to turn from the sin, and He does so because of His Righteousness, Mercy, and Grace. God forgives for His names sakes. It is because of who He is.

Can I encourage you to seek God’s forgiveness today? Tell God your sin, express a desire to no longer live in sin, and then plead that He forgives you based on His goodness. Or maybe you are struggling to forgive others. Can I encourage you to realize forgiveness has to do with who you are and not what they did or will do to “make up for it?” Pray and ask God to help you to forgive others the same way that He forgives you.
