Central Passage
John 6:60-66
Description

Here are the Pastor's notes. This is just a guide.

In this politically charged climate this passage should ring so true and completely shatter our hearts. They are calling for a false gospel, human dependency, a non offensive life, etc.

I am reminded of a church that is located on the campus of SEBTS. We were told to not attend there. There were wild rumors of rules to keep students out, but I always found that to be a bit silly. I never attended and accepted the fact that they did not desire a church to be the way I did. Yet, my heart still hurts because one day I saw a family walking across the street with children from the YMCA that I worked at. Here was a church that was known for sermons on how to plant flowers and social issues with no gospel. I know that God can save those children and people, but this is a place that has told God He is too hard.

How does a church or person become this way? How do they begin to exalt creation over the creator?

It begins by asking within your heart and then without, Who can listen to God?

God is too much, He doesn’t understand people, He offends others, God doesn’t know who He is messing with. These are attitudes of those who claim that God is too hard.

Why does Jesus keep calling out those that are grumbling? I don’t know the full reason, but in part, Jesus is making it clear that what they believe in will never saved them, only who they believe in. Jesus is leaving no doubt as to who they believe in or don’t. May I preach with such grace and truth as to not leave you in a state of confusion as to where you stand with God.

V 62 We fight to more to make heaven like earth than earth like heaven. Our prayers are for God to please keep the saved here just a little longer and rarely do we ever pray for the lost to get saved, much less the power of God to show up. Their lives are about the now and not Eternity.

V63 If you are struggling with Sin or disbelief here is a powerful truth: Life comes by the Spirit, death by the flesh. There is a message that God has given me but I cant preach. The grumbling will be too much.

Church to remove grumbling is humanly impossible, but so is being saved.

So we go back to the truth. The flesh gives death and the Spirit gives life. Your fleshly desires, preferences and favoritism will only lead to more death.

V64 Here is a difficult truth to handle: There are some that are in the church building but aren’t part of the church. There are lost people in the church today. If that’s you take comfort, God is not pointing this out to keep you lost, but rather to extend grace to you.

V65 They don’t understand basic theology.

  • If we could come to Jesus without the Father, then who would get the glory, God or us?
  • God gets all the glory of our salvation, sanctification and glorification.
  • We don’t decide who is saved or what the church should or shouldn’t do. That is the will of the Father. We are here to express our belief or unbelief.

Reckless Love by Bethel, Steffany G
Before I spoke a word   You were singing over me      You have been so, so
Good to me          Before I took a breath    You breathed Your life in me
You have been so, so Kind to me

[Chorus]
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down, fights 'til I'm found, leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn't earn it
I don't deserve it
Still You give yourself away
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God

[Verse 2]
When I was your foe, still Your love fought for me
You have been so, so Good to me
When I felt no worth You paid it all for me
You have been so, so Kind to me

There's no shadow You won't light up
Mountain You won't climb up
Coming after me
There's no wall You won't kick down
No lie You won't tear down
Coming after me
