Scheming

Church Family,

Genesis 27 is full of powerful lessons. You can learn to listen to the voice of God, over smell, and touch. You can learn how anger falsely presents itself as a comfort to those who possess it. Or maybe you can learn that once a blessing is given, even to a liar, that blessing can’t be removed.

What stood out the most this morning to me was how Rebekah and Jacob trusted in themselves, rather than the word of God.

Genesis 25:23 And the LORD said to her,

“Two nations are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you shall be divided;
the one shall be stronger than the other,
the older shall serve the younger.”

God told Rebekah that Esau would serve Jacob. What we don’t know is if she ever told Isaac or if he didn’t care, but God declared it. So, why would she scheme to get it? Why didn’t she trust God? Just as Abraham taught Isaac to lie, Rebekah taught Jacob to deceive others.

Genesis 27:8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice as I command you.

Genesis 27:11-13 But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Behold, my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.12Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be mocking him and bring a curse upon myself and not a blessing.”13His mother said to him, “Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, bring them to me.”

Did it all work out for Jacob, did it benefit him to lie? If destroying your family and future generations is a good thing, then yes, it worked out for him. His brother and his people battled the Israelites, abandoning the family faith. Jewish history tells us that Rebekah died and Isaac couldn’t due to health, Jacob was gone, and Esau wouldn’t bury her for obvious reasons. Her burial was done in secret. We know that later on her bones are brought with Isaac’s to be buried in Abraham’s tomb.

Will you scheme work today, maybe, but at what cost?

Love, Serve, Go
