Persecution and Comfort

Church Family,

Exodus 5:19 The foremen of the people of Israel saw that they were in trouble when they said, “You shall by no means reduce your number of bricks, your daily task each day.

Persecution is difficult. Thankfully most of us don’t face persecution often. Satan uses persecution to try and make us quit serving God, stop worshipping God, and to doubt the power of God. Comfort often leads us more than the Word and power of God. Israel would’ve rather remained comfortable slaves than step out and trust God.

Where does comfort keep you from serving God? How does discomfort keep you from taking steps of faith? Be encouraged, the Israelites later went on to trust God. It is never too late to trust in God.

Thankful for partnerships

Church Family,

I read this recently and have prayed it over you ever since. I am so thankful for you, our church and our leaders.

Philippians 1:3-6 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Just a suggestion on how to use this passage to pray for others:

1) Pray for your Sunday school teachers.

2) Pray for the deacons of the church.

3) Pray for the children’s, youth, and senior adult leaders

4) Pray for your pastor.

5) Pray for the church plants in Toronto.

6) Pray for your family.

7) Pray for that person that needs to be reminded that they are work in progress and that God doesn’t stop till He is done.

8) Pray for those that need to be reminded that we are partners in the gospel with all believers

1) Women’s Bible Study begins Monday night

2) Brotherhood is Tuesday. At 6pm we are doing some light maintenance, please bring a ladder. At 6:30 we will eat and have a message.

3) Gospel Training continues this Sunday at 6pm.

Cry for rescue

Church Family,

A fake, no good, broken, lying, you name it Satan has said it about my walk with God. To be honest, he is so right. I am a fake, no good, broken, lying, etc. of a believer. Satan so desperately wants to keep us focused on us, our sin, our problems, anything other than the solution: JESUS!

Exodus 2:23 Their cry for rescue from slavery came to God.

Exodus 3:2-3 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.”

They knew they were slaves, so what changed? They saw God as greater than their affliction. When we see our Savior as a consuming fire that doesn’t harm us, but is there to free us, we can overcome sin/satan through Christ. Satan wants you to believe that God is out to get you because he is a liar. Christ wants you to know that He desires to save you, but you can’t find salvation running from God. You only find it running to God.

Reader, get up off the mat, let Jesus heal your wounds, bind up your brokenness, and free you from your bondage. Cry out to God this moment. He already knows your sin. The question is do you know how powerful He is to save, forgive, and restore?

Calling the Worst

Church Family,

God never should’ve chosen me to be a believer, much less a minister. I often mention this verse as an example of how God calls those who are the least and not the best.

1 Corinthians 1:27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;

I bring all this up because of my devotion reading this morning. Jacob is dying and he is speaking to each of his children. Later in Exodus God sets aside the people of Levi for His service, but read(and laugh with me) at what Jacob says about Levi.

Genesis 49:5-6 Simeon and Levi are brothers;
weapons of violence are their swords.

6Let my soul come not into their council;
O my glory, be not joined to their company.
For in their anger they killed men,
and in their willfulness they hamstrung oxen.

SO, what does this all mean? Before Christ you may be the worst of the worst, but once you have Jesus you are a new creation. Your past is still your past, as terrible as mine is, yet, our past is an example of who we are apart from Jesus. We can acknowledge our failures and point to the difference that Jesus makes. There is great shame in what we used to do, but there is unspeakable Joy in who we are in Christ.

Despised by Others

Church Family,

Have you ever felt unwanted? Maybe you’ve felt like people despised you without even getting to know you. Preachers aren’t always welcomed around others. Sometimes we bring it on ourselves by wearing out our welcome. Other times it may just be how the person feels towards us. You don’t look the way they want, talk, act, or maybe they have a preference for someone else.

Genesis 46:33-34 When Pharaoh calls you and says, ‘What is your occupation?’ 34you shall say, ‘Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,’ in order that you may dwell in the land of Goshen, for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.”

The Egyptians did not like shepherds, did not want shepherds, they despised a shepherd. Yet, without shepherds how would they live? I believe that God is showing how the world views believers. They despise a believer. They despise what they believe and who they believe in. We should expect this but hope for better. We also, shouldn’t be the ones despising or looking down on anyone else.

Have you ever shunned or despised someone without even giving them a fair chance? Have you ever shunned a lost person? We are to be in the world, but not of the world. Can I encourage you to go and love on someone that the world despises, Forgive someone that may have even earned being shunned by you, and to stop despising others, especially fellow believers?
