Reacting to the sin of others

Church Family,

Genesis 9:20-22 Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard. 21He drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent. 22And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside.

Fresh off the boat and the world is filled with Drunkenness and Sexual Immorality. What does this say about us? That we are wicked, defiled, sinners that we are in desperate need of a Savior. This is a powerful story of how our sin can lead to the downfall of others. Thankfully the sinful behavior stopped at Ham. His brothers refused to go and look at their father. Instead they covered him as he slept.

What do you do when you see sinful behavior? Do you try to lead others to that sin or do you try to cover it? I don’t mean cover it up. I mean do you try to cover it in the blood of Christ?

God remembered

Church Family,

Do you ever feel like God has forgotten you? Abandoned you? Left you in the storm and forgot to come get you out of it? Life can beat us up pretty good. Satan is always looking for ways to whisper lies into our hearts…. God doesn’t love you anymore, God doesn’t care for you anymore, God is mad at you…..

Genesis 8:1 But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided.

The word remembered doesn’t have to do with forgetting us. It means to pay attention to, to fulfill a promise, to act on behalf of somebody. God also says in scripture that He is willing to forgive us of our sins and remember them no more. God doesn’t forget about our sins, He has dealt with them through Jesus and no longer holds them against us.

Recall if you will that God hasn’t spoken to Noah since he got in the boat. Surely Noah had to be discouraged at some point. When you are not hearing from God or what you want from God, remember His promises, remember His faithfulness, and remember that God will never leave you or forsake you.

Covering up Sin

Church Family,

My first day ever working I split my shorts. Yep, the whole world could see my undies. So, we took the only thing in the office that we could find to cover it up, a sweatshirt. I wrapped it around my waist and tied it. Did I mention it was during the summer, over 90 degrees, and I was in the 8th grade? On top of that my father told me the night before, don’t wear those shorts there’s a hole in them. I didn’t listen and then I had to cover it up.

Genesis 3:7-8 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

God told them not to sin, but they did not listen. Now they are trying to cover it up, but we can’t hide from God.

How are you trying to cover up your sin? To what lengths have you gone to make sure people don’t see your sin? Have you gone so far, that you are having to sin in order to cover up other sin?

There’s good news, God sought after Adam and Eve. They deserved to instantly die and be sent to Hell, but God’s grace pursued them. The God of grace is still pursuing sinners today. He is interested in removing your shame and forgiving your sin. Will you trust in Him today?

Rest in Christ

Church Family,

Shortly after having our first child someone told me, “Congratulations, you won’t get to sleep for the next 10 years!” (The jokes on the them, we have 4 kids so ha, we aren’t sleeping till 2040 something)

Genesis 2:1-2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

Rest is so important, but while God is concerned with physical rest, this passage is pointing to an even greater kind of Rest. A rest in which our soul rest from trying to save itself.

The song writer penned these words,

Standing on the promises, I cannot fall
Listening every moment to the Spirit's call
Resting in my Savior as my all in all
Standing on the promises of God

Hebrews 4:9-11 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. 11Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

My hope this morning is that your soul rest in the saving work of Christ.

Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

God the Creator

Church Family,

The first sentence of a paper or book is the most important and telling sentence of the book. So, what does God want us to know first? That He loves us? Dies for us?

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  1. God establishes time. There was a time when there wasn’t time.
  2. God created. He didn’t make things, He doesn’t discover things, God Creates them. Nothing exists without God having created them. Please understand that God didn’t create a bed. He created the things that we used to “make” a bed.
  3. The creator is greater than the creation. Many of the questions that we have about God are asked as if He is a creation. We wonder where God can from because we came from somewhere. God just is.

What’s the difference between you making something and creating something? A brief answer has to do with Authority. God has Authority over all the things that He created. All things will answer to the creator.
