John 6:16-21

Here are my personal notes for the sermon preparation. This is not a copy of the sermon.

John 6:16-21 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles,b they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

Background: Jesus is equal to the Father in power and authority. He is asking us to follow Him, but we often answer the wrong question. We judge or ability and not our willingness or availability.

Jesus has spent the night with the Father. For 2 reasons,

  1. He was just offered a terrible temptation of being empowered by man and not God.
  2. Within the next 24 hours many who are following will leave Him.

Jesus needed to spend time with the Father. If that is the case with Jesus, then how much more so for us. After overcoming temptation, it is wise to spend time with God in praise so that pride does not hardened our hearts.

Why did they leave? We never see the command from Jesus but it is to be assumed that Jesus instructed them to do so.

  1. Jesus is sending them into the storm. The Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted. What were those 3 temptations?
    1. If you are God, (pride) Provide for yourself-feed yourself
    2. If you are God, Plan yourself- throw yourself down- let them see who you are
    3. If you are God, Position yourself- worship Satan- all that Satan promised already belonged to Jesus.
  2. Does Jesus need the storm?
    1. He willingly allows difficult times. Make no mistake Jesus doesn’t need the storm to show who He is. God has made man with eternity in their hearts. Each one of us has a God shape hole if you will in our souls that desperately needs God. Yet we fill it with lies and junk.
    2. People wonder why God allowed Sin? In short, sin has never overcome God. Throughout history God has overcome sin and is still overcoming sin. So the question, really shouldn’t be why would God allow sin? It should be why don’t we realize that God is greater than sin with every breath.
  3. What benefits would this have on the disciples? What is Jesus revealing about Himself?
    1. God sends us out in the mess and evil of this world.
    2. God is greater.
    3. God perfects our faith in a way that He doesn’t just say He loves us, He shows that He loves us. Being perfect doesn’t always imply that you were perfect. It has the implication of being proven.
    4. V18 Who made the wind blow? Who made it dark in v17? Who sent the men out knowing the weather report?
    5. Jesus is walking on water. What an amazing sight?
  4. Do you accept God as He is? Do you really believe His Word?
    1. The disciples are surely calling out to God.
    2. What were they frightened by: Jesus or the weather? Is that a silly question? Or is that the question. Beloved, listen to the question, what did they fear?
    3. Matthew 10:26-33 So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.31Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.
    4. The presence of God makes the difference between us and Walmart. The lost and saved. Fear and joy. Obedience and disobedience.
    5. When God shows up will you take Him as He is or are like the Sadducees/leaders and try to make Jesus what you want?

Listener, God is sending the church into the dark, rough waters of this world. God has allowed sin and yet is not responsible for our sin. He is no more responsible than the boss who tells his employee not do something only to find out the employee has. Yet, because God is a good and merciful God, He has paid the price for our sin. He has made a way to salvation. The question is, will we receive Him? Will the church stop asking the wrong question about how much it cost to follow Jesus and start asking how much it cost to not follow Jesus? Will people realize they can’t fast food order a God?

Hell is real, evil is terrible, but God is all satisfying, able to save from sin, and deliver from Evil. The question is which do you fear?

Lastly the question is this: How do you plan to get to the other side? Once they received Jesus they were immediately to the other side. Quickly our goal should be to have the presence of God always in our lives. That is our daily destination, to abide in Christ.

God doesn’t need storms or boats to reveal Himself. Yet in choosing to use those things God shows He is greater than water, weather, storms, currents, fears, and sin.

You have put your trust in something to get you through this life. Are you willing today to trade all of that for Jesus?
