Truth is Truth, but we are not always ready to hear the truth. Sometimes we are more comfortable in the lie than the truth. Are you ready to hear about Jesus?

pastor's notes:

The Resurrection

Before we race to the empty grave, which is of the greatest importance to believers, let us prepare to see this moment.

If you have ever lost a loved you, you have probably had people tell you things that are absolutely true, but mistimed. He is with Jesus, yes, but we wish he was here. God is so good to us, yes, but right now this doesn’t feel good. Remember they have just lost their friend and who they thought was their Messiah.

Although scripture foretold of Christ need to suffer, die, and resurrect, nowhere in the Jewish culture did they teach or believe that. In fact, they believed the complete opposite.

Death is painful

Lazarus- Jesus wept, but he is also upset. Snorting like a horse

John 11:. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 22But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. 23Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. 24Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 25Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? 27She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

32Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. 35Jesus wept. 36Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! 37And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

This is to say that Christ dislikes death. He stands against death.

1 Corinthians 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

Death is not a friend of God’s! it is an enemy that he destroys

The story of the 2 men on the road to Emmaus

Luke 24: And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? 19And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

25And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

30When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” 33And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Here is Jesus walking with those that are hurting and don’t understand.

Before we go into the empty tomb this morning, I want you to know that Death is an enemy that Christ has overcome. Your hurt is not going to be dismissed by God, but rather He wants to walk with you through your pain.

Maybe you are here today and you don’t believe it. Christ wants to reveal himself to you.

Maybe you’ve heard and said all the right words, but like Mary and Martha, lack faith in God to believe what he has said. You’ve been through the motions, but not to Christ

Maybe you are here today and are hurting, people are telling you things that you don’t care if they are right or not, you are not ready to hear them. Jesus is here to walk with you. Listen to you and then gracefully respond.

1 Corinthians 15:12-19 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: 14And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. 15Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. 16For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: 17And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. 19If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

Without the Resurrection there’s

No hope of the afterlife

No truth to preaching

No value in Faith

V18 If Christ did not rise from the grave, we are still in our Sins, Lust reigns, and the devil still has complete power over us.

Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

V19 Some in the Corinthian church were living just for today. They did not see any benefits to living for eternity.

Most pitied because

  • Being a Christian meant enduring great persecution at that time. Who would want that life?
  • The pleasures of sin would be removed for no reason.
  • The trials that a believer endures are seen as being disciplined by a loving father who is preparing us for an eternity with him. Without the resurrection these pains have no purpose other than being painful.
