Description

Here is a brief breakdown of the meaning of the Lord's Supper

The Pastor's notes:

The Lord’s Supper

Luke 22:14-23 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 19And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. 21But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 22And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! 23And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

We do this in remembrance of Christ. The Lord’s supper is the gospel message. Just as God required Israel to meet together and to redeem/consecrate their first born. They did so, in a way that told others about God. If our lips stopped proclaiming the greatness of God, then through these things God gave us a reason to give a testimony. This morning we are testifying to the greatness of the Blood and life of Jesus.

Why bread and the fruit of the vine?

The Bread of Life

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

John 1:1-2 & 14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

We are to remember that our nourishment in this world does not come from bread alone, but the Word of God.

Hebrews 1:1-4 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

John 6:52-58 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 54Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 55For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. 57As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.58This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

Jesus loses 1000’s of people who were following Him because He said this.

Why do they fall away? What about this is so hard for us to accept?

Jesus is saying without Him you cannot have eternal life. Without Christ you cannot have the Father. Without Christ you cannot have the true Word of God!

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Life is in the blood

Genesis 9 and Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

They applied the blood to the doorpost

The High Priest couldn’t enter without the Blood

Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

The bible says that the Blood of Abel cried out to God, the blood of Jesus far greater.

  • His blood cries out Father this one is with us OR
  • His blood cries out Father this is my murderer

Examine yourself

How are you trying to get to the Father? How are you trying to make it into Heaven? Is it through your actions, your ways, your judgement that you are a good person?

The Bread shows us the Obedience of Christ

  • Father if possible take this cup from me, not my will, but your will be done
  • How often was Jesus at church? Did He miss a sabbath?
  • How often do we see Him praying and then going and doing for the Father?
  • Examine your actions
    • During the Passover they had to follow certain rules and ways. We too must approach the Lord’s supper in a holy manner.

The Blood shows us the grace of God

  • We are saved by grace through faith and not by works.
