They ask for help, but never follow it

Church Family,

I never mind giving advice, especially about scriptural things, but there are times that I grow weary of giving advice. Most of us have “that” person in our life. They are constantly asking for advice, but never follow it. Then, of course, they wonder why things aren’t going well. (just so I am clear, I don’t grow weary of helping, but I grow weary from watching them suffer)

God has exiled the people of Israel, the remaining leaders came to Jeremiah and said the right words, but…

Jeremiah 42:2-7 and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Let our plea for mercy come before you, and pray to the LORD your God for us, for all this remnant—because we are left with but a few, as your eyes see us— 3that the LORD your God may show us the way we should go, and the thing that we should do.” 4Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Behold, I will pray to the LORD your God according to your request, and whatever the LORD answers you I will tell you. I will keep nothing back from you.” 5Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act according to all the word with which the LORD your God sends you to us. 6Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God to whom we are sending you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.” 7)At the end of ten days the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah

**When Jeremiah finished telling them what the Lord said, they responded this way…

Jeremiah 43:2 Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The LORD our God did not send you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’

Some take aways…

  1. It is good to have others pray for you
  2. Don’t make commitments to God that you do not intend to keep.
  3. When God’s Word is clear, follow it. No matter what.
  4. Avoid those who try to make God’s word unclear. Like Satan they claim that God didn’t mean that for you. You or your situation is different. Avoid their godless advice.
  5. A mark of a believer is that they Follow God. Believers follow. Lost people reject God’s word.
  6. Jeremiah had a hard life, but a greater Savior.
  7. Which description bests describes you: Jeremiah, who followed, no matter how hard it got OR the people, who always knew better and rejected God?

Can I encourage you today to think of a time where you followed God’s word even though it was painful? How did God bless you?

Was there a time in which you should have followed but didn’t? It’s not too late to start following today.

  1. Spend time with God today. Thank Him for who He is.
